Correlation Between High School Sports and Grades
I have been playing soccer pretty much my whole life and I have noticed that playing soccer helps me keep my grades higher than usual but also be a stress reliever which helps do better in school. I noticed this exactly in middle school where I wanted to play for the school team but the coach was very strict about grades so I needed to make sure I got my grades higher so I did what I needed to do to play get my grades higher and play something I love to do.
I am interested in doing a study in my school about student grades and students playing sports to see if it affects everybody the same way or not have a correlation at all. This study will be a long study since it takes several weeks to accomplish to see if grades stay steady, drop, or get higher while students are on a sports team. The inspiration of mine is to always achieve more than you are needed to do to be the best. Soccer and good grades are the goals but to get them I need great grades and to play great in soccer as well.
The challenge I will be having in my capstone project is collecting all the data of each student in the experiment for both students active in sports and for students who are not active in school sports, and placing it all in a visual but with the help of my sponsor we will be making it possible. My initial argument question is if sports can actually change the grades of a student to a positive outlook and have a benefit on the student in a long run.
My capstone will be addressing the four Asia Society Leadership Performance Outcomes categories--- Investigating the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Communicating Ideas and Taking Action. This Capstone will prepare me academically for college in writing an in-depth paper and have it viewed by an HISD board member. This can create more publicity upon this topic especially of our school. It will allow me to perform more efficiently in technology because I will learn sophisticated research methods. This will allow me to increase my knowledge of public speaking skills by speaking in front of the HISD Board of Education and get their opinion on my research and hopefully in the long run by being provided with funds or programs for our school.
I. Learning Objectives:
· To learn if there is a correlation between sports and grades
· To create an experiment with students to see if the work is true.
· To learn how to manage time with scheduling student grades.
· To create a graph to place both student grades between active students and non active students.
· To write a 6 to 8 page paper presenting my research findings.
· To have a 20 to 30 minute presentation for my defensive learning presentation.
· To share my info to other students interested in this topic and research.

III. Form:
My presentation to one or more of the HISD Board of Education will reflect on my journey into this topic of figuring out if high school sports will correlate positively with grades (GPA). As I am preparing to continue with my research I will be learning how to use 21st century materials and apply my skills in creating a presentation that can catch my viewer’s eye and get a good note upon my research. The challenge that I will be facing as I will be presenting my project to the Board is that this issue will not be as important as it was to me and it may not catch their attention in making a small change for our small school.
This capstone will prepare for college in both academically and mentally with improvement of public speaking skills. This will prepare me academically because I will be creating presentations in a multi step process of starting from one object to a greater one for example from a graph in a calculator to a computer program which will be projected and placed in a presentation. Mentally I will be able to configure data in a formal and organized way which will help in creating schedules and data about how I am doing.
IV. Preparations:
a. I will need a capstone binder and blog/website.
b. The help from my sponsor: Mr. Coulter
c. A flash drive to save all my work electronically
d. Graph from a calculator to a projector
e. Flash cards with key points I will need to talk about
f. Consent from students to participate in my experiment

Methodology:September:
1. Begin doing research on topic and past studies created from this national issue. 2. Create Proposal upon Capstone Project October: 1. Research of past studies and find results of past studies to see what will final outcome occur. 2. Student Survey created. 3. Roster of all students collected to begin students. 4. Groups of both active and non active students created. November: 1. Surveyed students every week to great grades and begin placing in Excel to categorize students and begin creating small conclusions. 2. Begin creating graphs of student findings. 3. Talk with sponsor on the step of using the graphing calculators. December: 1. I will have my final presentation on December 18, 2012 2. I will be rehearsing my presentation to make it very good. |
Weekly Evaluations:Week 13:
Now i begin to finalize all my data in a presentable manner by creating a PowerPoint and have a poster board which will show how I did my work and data findings. Week 12: Now i have begun to calculate whether or not there is a correlation and sadly there is a correlation but it wasn't statistically significant to be classified as positive correlation. Week 11: As my data research is still in progress I am seeing a good side of my data that there is a positive correlation but a small one so far but hey its a start and hopefully by the end of my conducted study there is a strong positive correlation between high school sports and grades. As well I am trying to see with my sponsor if we can contact a HISD Board member of education to come and view my presentation which would be a big hit and show the reasons why this school should have a sports program. Week 10: As I am still continuing in doing my research of all the students I am noticing that is getting tougher to get all the grades since it is from 40 students and organization is a bit tricky but i will get there! Week 9: I have gathered my first week data and I am pretty excited about the data gathering and not telling students about what my study is about. Week 8: I joined with my sponsor and we created a survey for the students to take with questions that will confuse students to not know what the topic is about, idea created from my sponsor to not create any type of bias before the study. Week 7: I have been doing research about past studies similar to mine about high school sports and grades, and i have hypothesized that there will be a positive correlation between both variables. Week 6: I begin my in depth research about my topic and am finding my scholarly sources to use as backup of other school being involved in this study and as well as colleges since that is the point of adulthood and shows how you are if you are involved with extracurricular activities. Week 5: I have the first meeting with my sponsor approving that he would like to be my sponsor, and he approved it so it gave me a big sign of hope that this project will go great. Week 4: I started to think who will be a good sponsor so i asked myself what this project will contain and as i did my first research of the topic I realized it involved some statistics, which gave me the idea to have my previous AP Statistics teacher to be my sponsor and help me with the statistics part of the study created. Week 3: I have decided to do a topic that I have some background upon doing my junior year where we wanted to increase spirit of the school and have a soccer tournament but grades were required for the students who were gonna play. So my idea was a correlation between high school sports and grades. Week 2: I am discovering of different topics that can help my community and school and i have narrowed my choices to a few but I am undecided still since all the topics mentioned will help no matter what. Week 1: I am in Capstone class learning about how I will be able to change my community in my own specific way. I believe capstone will help become a better student and adult |
